We Walk the Plank With Our Eyes Wide Open...

Ello Baykahs!
July is traditionally our slowest month. The locals are all going on vacation. The tourists are scared of the heat. The sun is MELTING everything. BUT, for some reason the sun is NOT overheating one thing....THE SCAMMERS.

SCAMMERS?

This is our fifth year, and after about one year of being open we started getting some WEIRD phone calls. They were ALWAYS the relay calls used for the hearing impaired. They were always some strange order for 100-300 cupcakes in ANY flavor for the following day to be picked up by courier...always to be paid by money order. After LITERALLY 12 of these calls  in a matter of months (all of which we LUCKILY never fell for) we started telling the operator that this is a scam and please do not continue with this phone call....then they stopped. THEN the emails started. They looked like THIS:
The emails vary, but they ALWAYS want a HUGE amount of cake (flavors NEVER mattering) for a quick deadline, with "Happy Marriage" or that kind of weird variation on the cake or cupcakes...and ALWAYS picked up by courier...and ALWAYS in kind of broken English (this one was pretty decent in terms of language).

But this week we had something TOTALLY, INCREDIBLY, and SCARILY different...It was a personal phone call from a "personal assistant."

Now....living in Las Vegas, we have had LOTS of opportunities to bake for all kinds of celebrities. Some we know about and some we don't know about until AFTER. So, when I got a phone call from the "personal assistant of Mr. Will Smith" I didn't think twice...until she KEPT saying, "Mr. Will Smith and Mrs. Pinkett Smith" OVER AND OVER AND OVER again...and that their daughter "Willow is in town celebrating her birthday tonight and launching her new video with Nicki Minaj." And "I know it's last-minute, but we need 25 individually-boxed cupcakes for Nicki to give out as party favors."

The red flags were not going up yet at this point. I've had to do this before...people come to Vegas...they wait until the last minute for Thank You gifts...I get it. BUT, she added ONE, little, TINY detail after we had finalized the flavors, delivery times, and contact info that proved to be the BIGGEST RED FLAG OF THEM ALL, "Oh. I also need each box to have a $20 bill either tied on with a ribbon or inside the box."

HUH?

Now stop and think. WHY would "Mr. Will Smith" want to give 25 people $20 and a cupcake? That's WEIRD. AND why would his assistant need ME to go get cash for THEM when THEY are staying at a CASINO with access to HUGE amounts of cash.

Luckily, when I took the phone call I was actually ON a delivery with Brian WITH our children, so I agreed to the order, got all the woman's contact information, and hung up the phone....THEN I told Brian and the girls about the weird phone call I just had...I even said to them, "That was super weird." Then my Scooby Doo training kicked in to gear.

I asked Abbi to go on Twitter and see what Nicki Minaj or Willow had been tweeting that day...and guess what? Nicki had JUST tweeted something like "Who's coimin' out to my show tonight in Chicago?" AND then Abbi went on YouTube and saw that they DO have a single together...but the video came out last December. Oh yeah...Willow's birthday is on Halloween.

SO, Brian called back the lady and just said, "We will be more than happy to deliver you cupcakes; however, we just can't provide the cash." Her answer? "Oh. Never mind then. Mr. Will Smith really wanted someone to do the entire thing."

And that was IT. But think about it. That woman wanted me to deliver her $500 in cash from PROBABLY a fraudulent credit card number...and if I was HUNGRY for business and BLINDED by celebrity AND internet UNsavvy...I would have fallen for it. And, THAT is why I am telling YOU.

DON'T FALL FOR THIS SH*T. We work TOO F'N HARD for you to just GIVE it away. STOP and THINK before you get overly excited about a HUGE order or a possible celebrity order. BE SMART. BE SAVVY. BE SAFE...because there are people out there who DON'T want to work hard or be honest, and they are OUT TO GET YOUR MONEY.

Now...Let's focus on the POSITIVE!! Here are the Cupcakes/Cake O' the Week!

That's it, Baykahs. I hope you are now walking with your eyes a little more WIDE today when it comes to YOUR business. Protect yourself...

I'm still fairly new at running a bakeshop out of my home but learning really quickly by trial & error some very important lessons. Realizing a lot of people really don't understand or appreciate the time/work/cost that goes into creating something whether it's a cake or just fondant toppers. Also seeing the mentality that because it's a small in-home business they can just screw us over & who cares, that our policies don't count for anything......there's no way these people would treat a larger business the way they do some of us at times. I also don't think they realize that we take time away from our friends & our family working tirelessly on someone's order....we go without sleep & the little profit we make either goes back into our shop or helps support our families. Thank you so much for posting this, hopefully it will help other small in-home bakeries from getting scammed. ;)

Excellent use of Twitter!! Smart kids!

This a really great post...such an eye-opener. We have yet to run across a scammer, thank goodness. Now that I know it exists I definitely feel prepared. Thanks!

WOW. We have gotten a TON of the first scam over the years (and I always wonder who keeps falling for it that they haven't changed their script) but this is the first I've heard of the celebrity scam. Sheesh. Thanks for posting!!!

Wow! Thanks for sharing! We finally stopped getting those fake relay orders but the email scams haven't stopped. Seriously, who thinks of these things? They take away precious time we could be using to serve our REAL customers.

Thank you for that info! I've had a lot of the scams coming by email lately, and figured it out quite quickly. Luckily, I'm small enough that I don't take credit cards yet, and the majority if them insist you do. Plus, the very first one was fishy enough that I went "huh?" *scratches head* *searches interweb*. And found out about such scams happening all the time. However, I've never gotten a phone call... and wouldn't have expected it.
I'm glad you were quick to figure it was a scam!

Hi I live in Australia and run a small licensed cake business from home. I too have had these kind of scam emails (never phone calls) although I haven't had any that use the celebrity angle. It's unbelieveable - you're right we do work too hard to have to put up with this SH*T. I hope other bakeries/cake decorators haven't been scammed!!!

Thanks for the heads up! Question: what are you using on your fondant or doing to it that makes it shiny? If you don't mind sharing... :)

Wow! I know scammers are everywhere but this is crazy! I did note that one of the cakes listed at the end was one I got to have- the tropical one (yum) so that made me happy haha.

I got the same call, the same day at my Las Vegas Flower shop, the assistant for Mr. Will Smith, blah blah blah, I listened to the whole speel. I declined the "personal assistant" order, took the abusive response. An hour later, they called again on our shops second line! It was a blocked call on the caller id. A similar scam hit the flower industry in about 2006, putting money in the gift baskets. Genius about the twitter feed, one of our Younger designers told me she heard about this, so thought I'd chime in.
